Car phoning more dangerous than moderate drinking
Research commissioned by the insurance company Direct Line Insurance would seem to show that drivers who use a gsm run a greater risk than drivers having partaken of one (or two) ‘for the road’. Even drivers phoning ‘hands free’ represent a greater risk than those of us who drive ‘under the influence’.
The reactions of a driver using a GSM is one half of a second slower than that of sober drivers with their eyes on the proverbial road ahead. Subjects having drunk a glass (nay two) reacted sort of slower than the zero-alcohol control group, but, then again, rather faster than the phone jugglers. We are all aware of the risks of alcohol behind the wheel. Yet how few of us realize the risk of the GSM behind the wheel. Which is why the Belgisch Instituut voor Verkeersveiligheid (BIVV) has launched a new campaign to the effect that GSMing doesn’t, in fact, rhyme with getting safely to home. More information on this campaign “The many wonderful things you can do with your GSM", can be found on the website www.bivv.be. Maybe we should include a GSM bob in the car!
