Profiles of beer drinkers and wine drinkers

Who drinks beer and who drinks wine? In the United States the Survey Research Center of the University of Maryland conducted a national inquiry, in which among other topics the persons questioned were also approached concerning their consumption of beer and wine. For this particular part of the inquiry, the National Beer Survey 1999 - 2001, 1,389 persons of at least 21 years old were questioned about their drinking habits. The main conclusion of the inquiry was that the beer drinkers and the wine drinkers are to a large extent one and the same.

More than three quarters of the wine drinkers drinks beer on a regular basis and almost three quarters of the beer drinkers drinks wine regularly. Compared to teetotallers people that drink beer and/or wine are highly qualified and rather active visitors to the internet. The inquiry also reveals that moderate drinkers are also more passionate museum-goers than non-drinkers.
Within the group of drinkers one could distinguish two subgroups. Where beer is concerned you have the persons that mainly drink lager and people the regularly also try other kinds of beer. Among the wine drinkers there is also a distinction between the group of people that only drink cheaper wines and those that spend at least ten dollar for a bottle of wine. The group of people that taste beers shows a lot of similarities where education and income bracket are concerned with the group of wine drinkers that carefully select their wine. At the same time people that drink lager can be classified in the same subgroup with the people that drink cheaper wines.

Differences

Apart from the numerous similarities the researchers also discovered a few differences. Somebody that eg. preferably drinks wine drinks in general less than a typical beer drinker. Men prefer beer to wine, while women in most cases prefer wine. In general men also drink more than women.
