Children and alcohol - Tips for parents

Children these days are coming into contact with alcohol at a tender young age, via school and friends. As a parent you also have an important influence on the drinking behaviour of your offspring. Teach them to treat alcohol with all due caution and respect.

  • If your child has questions about, try to answer them;
  • do your best to ensure that any information you give about alcohol is correct;
  • tell your children the negative and the positive aspects of drinking;
  • if you drink when your children are around: drink in moderation;
  • if your older children want to go out drinking, lay down some rules (e.g., how much they may reasonably drink) and make sure that they stick to the rules;
  • if your child drinks too much, stay calm and talk things over without a five-act drama or apportioning blame.
