QUESTION & ANSWER

25/08/2008
SUGAR IN ALCOHOL-FREE BEER

Question: I am diabetic and I would like to know whether alcohol-free beer contains sugar just like any other beer.

Lindsay

Answer: Yes, alcohol-free beer does indeed contain sugar, and rather more than you are likely to find in your ordinary lager-type beer or pils. The average sugar content of alcohol-free beer is estimated at 55 g/litre, compared with 35 to 40 g/litre for ordinary lager-type beer (pils). Given normal consumption, diabetics are not advised not to drink alcohol-free beer. It is, however, recommended that they drink the beer with a meal. If in any doubt you should always discuss your beer consumption with your doctor.
