WHEAT IN PILS

Question: I read in the Question and Answer section that lager-type beers do not contain any wheat. However, I read on the label of Maes Pils that the brew contains the malt of both barley and wheat. Is this wrong, or is the said answer incorrect?

Answer: It is correct that wheat malt is used in the making of Maes Pils, which is the case for most pils beers, as stated on the label. However, the basis of pils is still barley malt, while the proportion of wheat malt is variable. The use of wheat malt varies not only from one  brewer to the next, but also in time. According to the 'Beer Atlas' wheat has been much used in the brewing process since time immemorial, but has fallen into disuse in recent years. Nowadays a fraction of wheat malt is again used in most pils beers for the sake of the flavour, which also evolves with time.
